The Effects of Human Leukocyte Interferon on Epidemic ,Keratoconjunctivitis and Herpetic Keratitis

Abstract
Since the discovery of interferon by Mick Issacs and Jean Lindenmann in 1957, it has been expected that this substance might proved to be a new effective agent in antiviral therapy.
Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis and Herpetic Keratitis have been a model for interferon application in animals and humans.
We have been studied the clinical effect of interferon which manufactured by Green Cross Corporation during the past 6 months, especially in the treatments of viral diseases eg, Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis, Herpetic Keratitis.
We shall present the results of the treatments in the 58 cases of epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis and 12 cases of herpetic keratitis with human leukocyte interferon treated in the departments of Ophthalmology, Kyung He University Hospital, Seoul University Hospital, and Korea University Hospital.
The patients of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis were divided two groups, one group was treated with. human leukocyte interferon alone, and the other group was treated with T-CTS-1 (the eye drop consists of CM 0. 5% and hydrocortisone 0. 25%). Next, in the patients of herpetic keratitis, one with human leukocyte interferon and idoxuridine, and the other with idoxuridine.
The following results were obtained;
In the patients of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis
1. In Interferon group, subjective symptoms were elgminated in 23 patients (72%) among total 32 patients within 4 days after treatment.
But T-CTM group, 10 patients (38%) were observed.
The differences between two groups was significant statistically. (P<0. 05 by % test of Yates¢¥ Correction)
2. In interferon group, objective symptoms were eliminated in 16 patients (50%) among total 32 patients within 4 days after treatment, but in T-CTM group 5 patients (19%) were observed. The differences between two groups was significant.
3. There is no significant difference between two groups in 1 week and 10 days after treatment.
But in the herpetic keratitis, We could not conclude statistically the differences between the human leukocyte interferon plus Idoxuridine and the only Idoxuridine because of a few examples and incorrect follow-up.
